Woke up and jogged 1.25 miles to make sure my knee wasn't hurting.  No sign of pain so I was very happy.  I've decided I must force myself to go lift weights with my legs twice a week and stretch daily.  I neglect to do those things far too often. Jing was very generous to sacrifice her sleep to take me to the start of the race at East Canyon.

It was very cold this morning, I ended up wearing gloves and a t-shirt over my race singlet and bib number.  The race was supposed to start at 8:30 but was closer to 8:50.  More people were there then I expected, I thought the cold may deter more people from arriving.

I started the race and was happy to see Adam RW with his cute kids cheering me on, the first 2 miles are fairly challenging.  My splits were 6:24 for the first and 6:46 for the second.  As I came over the hill, I was pleasantly surprised to see Fritz there waiting for me.  He was doing a training run for the Salt Lake Marathon and he helped me keep a decent pace during the remainder of the run.  Thank you Fritz! You helped me stay focused.

Splits after the most challenging portion of the run were

5:28, 5:04, 5:19, 5:24, 5:31, 5:26, 5:30, 5:12.

Total time for the 10 miles was 56:04. Did a 1.25 mile cooldown after the race.

Fun race! I won $50 to Ruth's diner so it was worth hanging around afterwards.

My parents showed up to the finish, big thanks to them and Jing.

Short term goal is to cross train more, hit the weights to strengthen my legs as well as stretch daily and use my foam roller.  Lots to improve.  I also need to do a 12-15 mile run at least once every 2 weeks.

3.1 easy miles around the neighborhood after dinner to loosen up

Great time especially for low mileage Adam. Like you said though things can only get better.

Great job Adam. I hope you didn't mind me running along. Your splits look great and you pushed those first two miles. It was brave of you to go with the tshirt and shorts. Good things are sure to come.

Great run Adam!! It was definitely cold this morning.

You ran a very smart race, taking the uphill somewhat relaxed (did you have anyone with you at that point?)... and then really ran the last 8 miles great.

Stoked for you man! You are making some huge leaps forward! Sub 16 5K and 56 flat for 10 miles in the past 2 weeks = awesome!!!

We're gonna run some easy recovery miles tomorrow, if you're interested let me know and we will figure out where/when.

Congrats again - you have a lot to be proud of with this one!

well done acorn! congrats on the win. i think it's cool that even though you just ran a smokin' pace for ten miles, and beat every one else in the race, you're still thinking about how to improve.

From Andrea on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 15:03:54 from 67.177.21.60

Nice race today! Not too shabby for your longest race ever. Speaking of longest races...I think we can convince you to run the SLC Half. All you gotta do is just spend a little more time with the JAJAFs....THEN we can all go out to Ruth's after the race!

From allie on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 16:00:54 from 97.126.222.108

$50 to ruth's is one of the best prizes you can get in a race, imo.

great job today, adam. you are improving rapidly and there's lots more to come.

From fiddy on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 16:04:51 from 97.126.222.108

Those are very comparable splits to what I ran in the half marathon on that course. (This was prior to my 3rd at TOU). Very impressive, especially for a 1st attempt.

Great race report! So fast!!

From Burt on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 17:04:47 from 72.223.93.158

Awesome splits! Beyond awesome. Are we talking Ruth Chris here? Because a $50 gift certificate will get you an appetizer, maybe. You should do a road trip to here. Start in the morning when it's nice and cold. By the time you get here in the afternoon, it'll be 90.

Jake-

There was still one guy with me at the top of the hill but he fell back at that point. Let me know if you guys are running in the morning.

Andrea-

You're a terrible influence.

Burt-

Nope it is Ruth's Diner. $50 will actually feed a small group.

Thanks for the kind comments and support.

Very nice win. It is amazing how quickly you are taking to racing. Keep it up and I look forward to what you will do at the half distance. So far you have chewed up and spit out everything else...

From PRE on Sat, Apr 07, 2012 at 20:42:39 from 99.50.213.11

ACorn,

Congratulations. I was looking at the splits and thinking...some of these splits are faster than what you should be running for a ten miler; much faster in fact. And then I figured it out...your VDOT value has increased! Of course! You are faster now. You really have made quite a bit of progress in the past few months. You have not peaked yet...there is more growth in you. And that is FANTASTIC! You have more PRs to set and I am looking forward to hearing about those.

Congratulations on the great effort and taking First Place as well.

Wow!! Excellent race man, I'm super stoked for you. What a great performance! 56:04 is a great time, even more impressive with the challenging first 2 miles. You are in great shape right now, and im very interested to see how far you can take it. Keep rolling!!

From SlowJoe on Sun, Apr 08, 2012 at 15:10:21 from 69.131.141.92

Wow, seriously great race. Incredible pace for a 10-miler. I'd love to see you run a half as well!

From Wesley Hunt on Mon, Apr 09, 2012 at 08:47:47 from 198.8.4.10

Getting in late here, Adam, but I also want to sing your praises! You're top-end speed is freaking incredible, and if you have the desire, you'll be dominating longer distances very soon.

Would love to talk to you offline about speedwork sometime.
